What Is a Slot?

A slot (also known as a stop) is a small space on a reel that holds one or more symbols. When a reel stops in a slot, it yields a winning combination of symbols and awards credits according to the paytable. Symbols vary by game, but classic examples include fruit, bells, and stylized lucky sevens. Most slots have a theme, and bonus features are aligned with that theme. In most cases, a player inserts cash or, in “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode and activates the machine by pushing a button or pulling a handle.

A slot is a dynamic placeholder that either waits for content to be added (a passive slot) or calls out for it (an active slot). The content that fills a slot is dictated by a scenario, which may use an Add Items to Slot action or a targeter to find and place content in the slot. Slots also have a number of important properties for offer management.
