Poker Tips – How to Increase Your Chances of Winning a Hand

A game of poker requires a certain amount of skill and psychology but also relies on chance. There are ways to increase your chances of winning a hand but these tips don’t always work because every situation is different.

One tip that all the pros will tell you is to only play the best hands. This is a great strategy when playing to make money but not so much when you are just playing for fun. Some of the best hands to play are high pairs (aces, kings, queens, and jacks) or high suited cards (ace-king of the same suit). If you have unsuited low cards then it is probably better to fold your hand rather than risk losing it to another player’s big beat.

When it is your turn to act you can say “call” or “raise” to put a certain amount of chips into the pot. You can also “fold” and throw your cards down to stop the betting.

It’s important to learn how to read other players. Watch for their tells, which aren’t just the obvious nervous habits like fiddling with their chips or putting on a ring. You can often tell what someone has by their betting style and how they move their chips, for example if a player who usually calls bets a lot on the flop then they are likely holding a good hand. Trying to guess what other players have in their hands will help you make better decisions about how to play your own.
